The Government delegate of the Junta de Andalucía in Jaén, Erik Domínguez, has stated that extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) has become «on its own merits» a hallmark of quality linked to the province of Jaén. He said so during the visit he made together with the territorial delegate for Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Soledad Aranda, to the facilities of the La Loma oil mill, in Baeza.
One of the group's four companies
La Loma is part of Castillo de Canena, a group made up of four companies. The CEO of Castillo de Canena, Francisco Vañó, was also present on the tour.
Domínguez praised this oil mill's commitment to modernisation and the evolution of the sector, and recalled its history as one of the world's first producers of early-harvest oil of the picual variety. According to him, the company has more than two centuries of history.
The weight of the olive grove in the province
The delegate stressed the olive-growing potential of Jaén. He described the province as «a living universe with 67 million olive trees, the largest humanised forest in the world», a space where nature, people and agricultural production coexist.
Looking ahead to the new olive harvest campaign, Domínguez was optimistic. He stated that «there is no longer any need to convince anyone of the quality of our oils, not only for their food components but also at a health level», and concluded that «the future belongs to the olive grove, the future belongs to EVOOs».
