The Cathedral of the Assumption of Jaén has been part of the network of Magical Places of Spain since this weekend, an initiative of Pueblos Mágicos de España that distinguishes sites, monuments and natural spaces of historical and heritage roots. The recognition was presented during the VI National Meeting of Villages of Spain, held in Padrón (A Coruña) with more than 350 participants among institutional representatives, experts and agents of the sector.

From 18 to 32 spaces

The network thus goes from 18 to 32 recognised spaces, after the incorporation of 14 new corners of the country, among which is the see of Jaén. The award does not entail any specific action on the temple: its scope is incorporation into this promotional network. The councillor for Culture and Tourism and first deputy mayor, María Espejo, collected the distinction and thanked the organisation for putting «the focus on Jaén and on the great hallmark of this city». Espejo described the temple as «one of the greatest jewels of the Spanish Renaissance» and maintained that the appointment «constitutes a wonderful loudspeaker to project the heritage wealth of Jaén».

Jaén as a destination

Within the framework of the meeting, the municipal official presented the tourist offer of the capital: the Castillo de Santa Catalina, the via ferrata, the climbing routes near the town centre and a gastronomy that, she noted, brings together four Michelin Stars in 200 square metres. To this is added, she indicated, the designation of Jaén as one of the ten gastronomic cities of Europe for 2027 by the GeoGastronómica platform. The councillor added that the goal is for the Cathedral to be recognised by Unesco as a World Heritage Site.
