The Clinical Management Unit of Hematology and Hemotherapy of the Northern Health Management Area of Jaén, part of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS), holds the fifth edition of the Mining Route on Saturday, November 14. It is an 8.5-kilometre walk through the mining heritage of Linares aimed at patients and professionals, combining physical exercise, socializing and learning about the surroundings.

A walk open to families and dogs

The meeting point is at 9.30 hours on the esplanade of the Iglesia de Adaro, on the outskirts of Linares. This year's route is called Filones en la Dehesa «Las Yeguas», it is of low difficulty and has a maximum gradient of 38 metres. Along the walk it passes through the area of Adaro, La Cruz and the San Juan-Esmeralda and El Cobre reefs, among other points of the old mining district. The day is conceived as family sport and allows dogs to take part. According to the organisers, the aim is for patients and professionals to share the activity with their relatives and pets outside the healthcare setting.

How to sign up

To take part, write to ugchematologia.agsnjae.sspa@juntadeandalucia.es and give your first name and surnames, telephone number and number of attendees. These details are used to organise the walk and to notify registered people if weather conditions make any change necessary.

Five editions and twenty years of treatment

The initiative began in 2022 under the slogan «Porque caminar juntos es llegar lejos». Many of the patients treated in the unit have gone through or are going through oncological processes or treatments, and this year marks the 20th anniversary of the first chemotherapy treatment in Hematology. The Ayuntamiento de Linares and the association Proyecto Arrayanes, specialised in the study, conservation and dissemination of the mining-industrial heritage of Linares, which prepares the route every year, collaborate in the organisation. The director of the unit, doctor Carmen Avellaneda, points out that the activity was born to meet patients «from a different perspective, sharing time, experiences and physical activity outside the hospital».
