The president of the Diputación de Jaén defends the role of transhumance in the economy and in the conservation of the countryside at the Segureño lamb conference.
According to Latorre, transhumant livestock farming plays an important role in the provincial economy and, above all, in the Sierra de Segura region. The president of the Diputación noted that these conferences serve to recognise the work of livestock farmers and to address the challenges ahead.
Latorre also stressed the active role of extensive transhumant livestock farming in conserving the natural environment, preventing forest fires and helping to keep population in rural areas. In his view, these arguments should lead administrations to support the sector with programmes, initiatives and aid, to promote the segureño lamb and to boost the tourism dimension of this activity.
Talks and gastronomy
The conferences, held under the slogan «Diferentes por naturaleza», are spread across different venues in Santiago de la Espada and Pontones. The programme includes talks by experts and activities linked to transhumance, extensive livestock farming and the local gastronomy.
The event was also attended by the deputy for Agriculture, Livestock, Environment and Climate Change, Isabel Uceda.
Until Saturday 24
The meeting ends on Saturday, October 24. Anyone who wants to take part in the activities can do so at the venues set up in Santiago de la Espada and Pontones during these conferences.
