Baeza hosts an international meeting on cellular memory and disease

Topics Baeza

The Antonio Machado Campus in Baeza (Jaén) holds the workshop "Transcriptional memory in health and disease" from October 20 to 22, analysing how cells maintain their function throughout life and what happens when these mechanisms fail.

The Universidad Internacional de Andalucía (UNIA) has launched at the Antonio Machado Campus in Baeza the second of its international scientific meetings on Biomedicine of 2026. The workshop "Transcriptional memory in health and disease" is held from October 20 to 22 and brings together researchers from several countries.

What is studied

The meeting focuses on the molecular basis that allows cells and tissues to fulfil their function throughout life. It also addresses how the failure or alteration of these mechanisms influences various human diseases, according to UNIA. Among the participants are Ángel Barco, from the Instituto de Neurociencias (CSIC-UMH), an expert in epigenetic and transcriptional mechanisms of neuronal plasticity and memory; Sui Huang, from the Institute for Systems Biology in the United States, specialised in systems biology applied to cancer progression and therapy; John Greally, from the Center for Epigenomics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, who studies the role of epigenomics and chromatin dynamics in human diseases, and Leonid Mirny, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who works on the three-dimensional organisation of the genome as a support for cellular memory.

Organisation and other meetings

The organisers are Irene Hernando-Herraez, from the Laboratory of Epigenetics and Single Cell Dynamics at the IBMB-CSIC in Barcelona; David Landeira, from the Centre for Genomics and Oncological Research (GENYO) in Granada, and Pablo Navarro, from the Institut Pasteur in Paris. These workshops are programmed by the Centro Especializado de Apoyo a la Investigación (CEAI) of UNIA, with the aim of fostering international cooperation and scientific exchange in Biomedicine between Andalusian researchers and the international scientific community. The 2026 edition includes a third and final meeting, "DNA–Protein Crosslinks: Mechanisms and Links to Rare Genetic Disorders", organised by Iván V. Rosado, from the Centro Andaluz de Biología y Medicina Regenerativa (CABIMER), and Fernando Gómez-Herreros, from the Instituto de Biomedicina de Sevilla (IBiS), scheduled from November 18 to 20. The director of the Antonio Machado campus in Baeza, José Manuel Castro, and the director of CEAI-UNIA, Juan Jiménez, welcomed the participants.
