The Universidad Popular Municipal de Jaén (UPM) has launched UPM Next, an autumn cultural agenda open to all citizens that adds to its usual courses. The activities are divided between cinema, flamenco, theatre and sound experimentation, and will run until November 27.
Cinema in the Sala Asuán
The UP! CINEMA cycle brings back screenings in the Sala Asuán with a film club focused on independent productions, especially from the Jaén audiovisual sector, with the collaboration of the Asociación Jaén Audiovisual. The first date is on Wednesday, October 28 with 'Entre dos tierras', by Cristina Mediero and Álvaro Torres. On November 5 the documentary 'Benito Pérez Buñuel', by Luis Roca, will be screened, and the cycle will close with 'Tiempo entre olivos', by Fany de la Chica.
Workshops and flamenco
The multidisciplinary artist Ernesto Artillo offers on October 29 the lecture 'Imaginario para una nueva espiritualidad' and on October 30 the performative workshop 'En Volandas. Ejercicios de elevación hacia lo común', free and with registration at inscripciones@upmj.es.
Flamenco will have two dates. On Friday, October 30, the Sala Asuán hosts a performance of singing, dance and guitar within the 'Circuito de Flamenco Aficionado', which the UPM shares with Alcalá la Real, Alcaudete, Frailes and the flamenco clubs of Torredelcampo and Priego de Córdoba. On November 12, the Sede Sabetay becomes a tablao for International Flamenco Day, with Victoria Romero on vocals, Mamen Laguna on dance and José Antonio Hinojosa on guitar.
Theatre, memory and sound
On November 17, the teachers Tete Cobo and Luis Ángel Jacinto give the workshop 'Cantar Mal', with the actress Amada Santos, linked to the play 'Floren Foster', which arrives at the Sala Asuán on November 20. Tickets are available on the Giglon platform.
On November 19, the collective Herstóricas holds for the first time in Jaén a walk-workshop on the repression of women throughout history, within the events of 25N. The programme concludes on November 27 with 'Acción Sonora', a workshop by Antonio Blanca that will record sounds of the Universidad Popular to create a sound map.
Registrations and enquiries
Information about the activities, registrations and enrolments can be consulted on the website of the Universidad Popular Municipal, upmjaen.es. The 2026/27 academic year has begun with most courses filling their places and more than 4,100 enrolments, according to the Ayuntamiento.
The councillor for Universidad Popular, José Manuel Higueras, has stated that the programme seeks to make the institution «a living place, open to the city, where things happen, ideas are generated and culture becomes a shared experience».
