The Andalusian Cooperative Society (SCA) San Vicente de Mogón, in Villacarrillo, is celebrating its 60th anniversary. It was founded in 1966 with 100 members and today brings together more than 1,300. It markets the Puerta de Las Villas extra virgin olive oil and its production reaches ten million kilos of olives.
The president of the Jaén Provincial Council, Juan Latorre, has described this entity as a benchmark in quality, innovation and sustainability in the olive oil sector at provincial, Andalusian and national level, during the anniversary event. Latorre congratulated the members "for everything they have achieved so far".
Prices below costs
At the same event, Latorre expressed his concern that the current price of olive oil barely exceeds three euros. He has called for fair prices and described the sector's profitability as non-negotiable: "It is unacceptable that it is sold below production costs".
The president of the Provincial Council has welcomed the Spanish Government's measure to withdraw 12% of this season's olive oil to regulate supply and stabilise the market. He also argued that Jaén should not only lead production, but also value, the market and international rules of the game.
José Gilabert stressed that farmers must help change the market dynamics, which are going through a critical situation, and explained that the cooperative has opted to stand out through quality, sustainable production, circular economy and value for traditional olive groves.
The celebration was also attended by the Government subdelegate in Jaén, Manuel Fernández; the mayor of Villacarrillo, Francisco Miralles; the delegate of the Government of the Junta de Andalucía in Jaén, Erik Domínguez, and the deputy for Agriculture, Livestock, Environment and Climate Change, Isabel Uceda, among other authorities.
