The Cofradía de Nuestra Señora de la Capilla, Patron and Alcaldesa Mayor de Jaén, has commemorated the first century since its founding. The central events of the centenary were a Eucharist of thanksgiving, celebrated on September 11 in the Basílica de San Ildefonso, and an extraordinary procession of the Virgin.

A mass with the brotherhoods of the capital

The Eucharist was presided over by the Bishop of Jaén, Sebastián Chico Martínez, and brought together brothers, faithful and devotees of the Patron, along with representatives of the brotherhoods and confraternities of the capital. The chaplain of the Cofradía, the parish vicar and seminarians of the Diocese also attended, and the liturgy featured the musical performance of the Dúo Kyrie Eleison. In his homily, the Bishop gave thanks for this century of life of the corporation and remembered the founders, governing boards, hermanos mayores, chaplains, members and collaborators who have kept the devotion alive. «A Cofradía does not exist only to preserve a tradition, however beautiful it may be, but is born to help live the Gospel, guard and transmit a devotion and lead its brothers to Jesus Christ by the hand of Mary,» he said.

The visit to the Hospital Universitario

The Bishop highlighted among the initiatives of the commemorative year the extraordinary visit of the Virgin to the Hospital Universitario de Jaén. According to his explanation, the Patron left her temple to go to meet those who could not come to Her, and her presence brought consolation and hope to the sick, their families and healthcare professionals. «That hospital became, for a few hours, a true sanctuary of life and hope,» he stated. Don Sebastián encouraged the members to live this centenary as an impulse for the future and to reach out to young people, families, those far from the faith and those going through situations of suffering. «It is not enough to wear a medal on one's chest if the Gospel does not enter the heart and transform our life,» he stressed.

Acknowledgements

The celebration was accompanied by numerous brotherhoods and confraternities of Jaén, representatives of the Guardia Civil, Policía Nacional and Policía Local, the camareras of the Virgin and the Grupo Joven of the Cofradía. The corporation has thanked institutions, brotherhoods, members, devotees and all those who have taken care of the details of the liturgies of this centenary year for their collaboration.
