The Technical Conference on Organic Segureño Lamb, framed within the Pontones Livestock Fair, is held from this Thursday until Saturday in Santiago de la Espada. The programme addresses the contribution of extensive livestock farming to natural spaces, its fit within the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and health in the livestock sector, among other matters.
A sector with generational succession
The delegate of the Government of the Junta de Andalucía in Jaén, Erik Domínguez, has taken part in the opening of the meeting alongside the president of COAG Jaén, Antonio Punzano, and the presidents of SAT Sierra de Segura, Pedro José Soria, and of Pastos de Pontones, Emilio de la Cruz. According to Domínguez, more than 70 young people have joined the livestock sector in Santiago-Pontones, a municipality that, in his view, leads the generational succession of this traditional activity.
The delegate has stated that «extensive livestock farming and organic lamb farming is the hallmark of these municipalities» and has explained that the meeting serves to «continue learning about their challenges and demands». He has also highlighted the technical, commercial and promotional content of the conference.
What Santiago-Pontones is
Santiago-Pontones is a municipality in the southeastern part of the Sierra de Segura region, in the province of Jaén, with 2,629 inhabitants (INE 2025). It was created in 1975 by the union of the municipalities of Pontones and Santiago de la Espada, the town that hosts this conference. The Segura river rises in its municipal area, and the Borosa, Madera, Aguamulas and Zumeta also run through it.
