The Iberian-Roman site of Cástulo, in Linares, has received a visit from a delegation of international journalists specialising in the food and finance sector. The tour is part of the activities of the Andalucía Gusto del Sur International Cheese Festival, whose central event will be the final of the World Cheese Awards in Córdoba on November 12.

What they have seen

The journalists have toured the site with its director, Marcelo Castro. As detailed by the Delegación del Gobierno andaluz en Jaén, the complex offers unique places such as the large baths, the Mosaico de los Amores, the Acropolis and the monumental area. The delegation has also visited the company Quesos y Besos, whose Olavidia cheese won the World Cheese Awards in 2021.

A showcase of 5,300 cheeses

This year the competition brings together 5,300 cheeses from 47 countries across five continents, according to the Delegación. Various products from the province of Jaén take part in it. The delegado del Gobierno andaluz en Jaén, Erik Domínguez, has stated that the visit serves to show «the historical and heritage wealth of our province» and the tourism and cultural potential of this enclave in Linares.

What the event leaves behind

Domínguez has stressed that Jaén is known for olive oil, but that there are also professionals in dairy, partridge, honey and meat who place their products at the forefront of agri-food. In his speech he recalled the 2021 award and argued for using the competition as a showcase to make known the gastronomy and heritage of the province.

The calendar

The final of the World Cheese Awards will be held in Córdoba on November 12, within the Andalucía Gusto del Sur International Cheese Festival. The visit to Cástulo is part of the previous activities of that festival.
